3-4 Hour Introduction to Backyard Beekeeping Workshop. Dare to live on the wild side and come take a hands-on beginner beekeeping class with The Moran Family Farm located in North Georgia! Ages 12+ are appropriate for this workshop! Parent must be onsite with children under 18.
Learn all the fundamentals of basic, backyard beekeeping from a local experienced beekeeper with over 25 years’ experience. Through discussion and hands-on instruction, you will learn about the infrastructure of a working hive, tools, production of honey and pollen, and of course the beloved Queen! This workshop is for anyone who’s decided to be a beekeeper or is newly working with honeybees and wants some hands-on instruction and experience to take back to their apiary.
This workshop begins with an “outdoor classroom" discussion where you will learn why bees are so important to our local agriculture as well as how easy it can be to set up and care for your very own hive in your backyard. The discussion will be followed by stepping into the The Moran Family Farm’s apiaries (currently at 27 hives) to explore the hives and get hands on experience with what to look for and how to handle a hive.
During this 3-4 hour BEE-U Introduction to Backyard Beekeeping Workshop participants will have the opportunity to: Suit up and look like a real beekeeper! All students are supplied a full or half bee suit if you don’t have your own prior to going into the apiary. Learn about the hive and receive hands-on education of the construction and inner workings of a beehive.
Where's the honey? Go into an active hive to find honey, pollen, brood and the Queen. And do a straight from hive honey tasting! Wrap it up! After spending approximately 1 hour in the apiaries, students will go back into the "outdoor classroom" and have a chance to continue the buzz with reflection on the day’s activities and any questions you may have about bees, hives, tools, and backyard beekeeping.
